Warning signs
- A quote far below every other company's, often given without asking about your inventory.
- A large deposit, especially in cash or by wire or payment app.
- No TxDMV number, or a number that doesn't match the company name.
- A generic phone greeting ("Movers!") instead of a company name.
- No local address, or an address that turns out to be a mailbox.
- Blank or incomplete paperwork you're asked to sign.
- Pressure to book today to "lock in" a price.
- A rental truck instead of company equipment, with no explanation.
The "hostage load"
In the worst scams, a mover loads your belongings and then demands far more money before unloading. Protect yourself by getting the full price in writing before loading starts, and never sign a blank or incomplete document.
Protect yourself
- Verify registration yourself; don't rely on a number printed on a website.
- Pay by credit card when possible.
- Keep copies of everything you sign.
- Trust your instincts. If something feels off, keep looking.
